A New Shot-Stopper for the Premier League Return?
Leeds United football club have reportedly reached a total agreement with Olympique Lyonnais for Brazilian goalkeeper Lucas Perri, signalling their intent to shake up the goalkeeping department ahead of the 2025/26 Premier League campaign. With current number one Illan Meslier under scrutiny for error-prone performances, Perri’s potential arrival comes at a critical moment for Daniel Farke’s side.
The transfer fee is believed to be in the region of €15 million (£12.8 million), with Perri already travelling to England for a medical. While a recent minor muscle injury may delay his full integration, it is not expected to derail the move.
Who is Lucas Perri?
Lucas Estella Perri, born in 1997 in Valinhos, Brazil, is a 1.97m tall shot-stopper with a growing international reputation. After beginning his senior career at São Paulo, and brief spells with Crystal Palace and Náutico, Perri rose to prominence with Botafogo in Brazil’s top flight before securing a move to Lyon in January 2024.
Last season, he made 45 appearances for the French club, keeping 13 clean sheets across Ligue 1 and the Europa League. Known for his strong reflexes, penalty saves, and command in the box, he featured prominently in Lyon’s Europa League quarter-final tie against Manchester United. Perri has also represented Brazil at both youth and senior levels.
Why Are Leeds United Signing Him?
The Peacocks’ primary motivation is stability. Illan Meslier’s form has been inconsistent, punctuated by high-profile mistakes such as the 2-2 draw against Sunderland. With Leicester City reportedly circling, manager Daniel Farke is prioritising defensive reinforcements.
Perri brings top-tier experience, having prevented 6.05 goals over expected in Ligue 1 last season, and offers an upgrade in key metrics over Meslier. His 10 clean sheets in 33 Ligue 1 matches were a highlight, and his success in European fixtures shows he can handle pressure.
What About the Injury? – Lucas Perri
While Lyon confirmed a minor muscle issue during pre-season, which has seen Perri miss two friendlies, manager Paulo Fonseca expects him to return for games on 30 July and 2 August. Leeds will assess the injury during his medical, but it is not thought to be a deal-breaker.
Impact on Leeds and Meslier
Should the deal go through, Perri will likely challenge for the number one spot. Leeds conceded 41 goals during their Championship-winning season, but stepping up to the Premier League demands higher standards. Perri’s presence could also force a decision on Meslier’s future, especially with interest from rival clubs.
Goalkeeper | Matches (2024/25) | Clean Sheets | Goals Conceded | Notable Performances |
---|---|---|---|---|
